TASK 4 FINAL

Concept/goal of Project:
You must create 3 types (SML) of spaces that work together compositionally (XL).
Through systematic exploration and experimentation, the spaces you design may affect the ways people and things move and evolve around the site. It must play an active role in its context and magnify, intensify or modify the relationships between the various components you identify in your exploration.

The approach and design process should be based on the concept you have developed during the first portion of this semester (you will find an excerpt of the assignment below TASK 1 Part 3). If well formulated, the concept should guide you in your analysis of the site and help you with form generation. Ultimately you must be able to operate on the site (through transformation, metamorphosis, variation,…). You must take a position and make a statement!

S (secret space-Pause)
Focus on small scale space. (1 person)
This may be thought of as a single module, a satellite, an artifact or a fragment of your system occupying a unique location, a forgotten, unconsidered or ill-considered place. In order to create a program, or function for this object/artifact you may take a closer look at what is happening around you, think of the overall system and concept, see where this element fits in. Focus on hidden details of familiar objects and explore common places and behaviors.
Requirements: Not site specific - 1 seating and “works” space.

M
(Display Space – transit)
Focus on medium scale space. (5 to 10 people)
The “in-between” is an ambiguous but dense zone, neither here nor there, more implicit than obvious, residual but multilayered (complex). There are many forces acting on and around this site. Identify those and integrate the concept with your thinking process and analysis.
Requirements: Site is located on the median between 2 crosswalks near 14th street.
Optional extension to Broadway traffic light.

L
(Public space – Gathering)
Focus on larges scale space. (15 to 25 people)
This is a space designed for gathering.
Tucked away, removed from major traffic and circulation paths, this site deals with issues of insertion. How can you re-integrate this gathering space, either physically or through a more subtle strategy of composition.
Requirements: Small alley space adjacent to Varsity Jewelry store - 1 public gathering space - Additional support space will vary according to project.

XL
(urban - event)
Through 3 interlinking projects/spaces, this task explores the spatial, temporal and programmatic aspects of Event as it is transformed into form. All spaces you have designed must work as a composition both physically and conceptually in the landscape.

TASK 1 PART 3 (SYSTEM OF OPERATION)

Description of the Task:
In this exercise, you must extract conceptual information from your 3 DWGS in order to create a final composite drawing and construct a physical model.
Both SHOULD incorporate the graphical language you have already used as well as the basic concept /Idea you started to develop in the 3 DWGS.

THE CONCEPT:
You must further develop your concept and translate the ideas into a 3d construct. First, you must either research an existing system (generic) from which you can extract a set of rules related to the concept you developed during the first exercise or do a precedent study in order find examples of a variety of applications already using existing or new systems of operation.

Each system should have 3 components. You can find those in your DWGS as follows:
DWG1: MOTION_CHANGE_EVOLUTION
Represents the in-between spaces, the skin, the envelope, and the shape. Also encompasses the qualities of the shapes (the mechanic, the organic, the soft, the actual and the ephemeral). It sets the overall formal expression of the physical landscape.
DWG2: ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEMS_GRIDS_ PATTERNS_TEXTURES
Represents the framework, structure, underlying fabric and internal organization. It sets the rules of articulation for all elements.
DWG3 NODES_JOINTS_CONNECTORS_ARTICULATIONS
Represents the moment of heightened energy, points of impact, convergence, focus, repulsion and attraction. It sets the moments of disruption.

System of operation requires one or more of the following articulations:
Permutations – Metamorphosis – Transitions – Transformations – Variations – Alterations – Modulations - …

What you have to do:
You must provide no less than one 18by24 poster outlining your concept (include your research).

THE DRAWING:
The final composite drawing should represent one aspect of your 3d physical model.
It may show a specific view (plan-section-elevation) or represent your conceptual idea as it manifests itself in the physical model. Remember, pay attention to overall aesthetic, line type, line weight and composition on the page.
Be inventive in the way you incorporate your ideas.

Drawing should be black and white line drawing. Format: 1ft by 3ft

THE MODEL:
In this exercise, you must work with 2 types of models: sketch and presentation. The sketch models must serve as tools of design and help you translate your concept and ideas into 3d form. You must find a quick way to construct and modify these models as you investigate a multitude of ideas. Each model should contain the 3 components and the various elements of articulation previously mentioned. At the end of this process you must create a comprehensive final presentation model.
Remember, pay attention to craftsmanship and overall composition.
Model base: 1ft by 3ft. 3/8in MDF
Materials:
Sketch Models: You can use paper material (chipboard, museum board,…). You can also use the laser cutter.
Presentation Model: You can only use wood, basswood, metal and Plexiglas. You can use the laser cutter (we will discuss this in class)
